David Münnich, the founder of Team Vortex, took some time to speak with PlanetUnreal. David is the creator of one of the most original maps in Unreal Tournament history, DM-1on1-Lego. The map is completely made out of Lego blocks and is a blast to play! Without further rambling, here is the interview:
Your Lego map has quickly made it on my frequently-played list. Did you think it was going to spark up such a fanbase?
How big is the fan base? There are 2 servers runnning it, not so big I think. When I was building it I thought it will be crap. When I played it against a bot....I still thought it would suck. Then I played it against Tonnberry and we all loved it :D I fixed some bugs, released it, then we were playing it 24/7 on the NGI server with 4-5 ppl (only 1on1, the others were waiting). Definetly my best map yet, just ignore the visuals :)
Before you created your Lego map, did you play with the actual Lego blocks? The visuals look very authentic, that is.
Nah, I don't have too many Legos. I didn't think much about the visuals; The only question was if I was gonna add those "nipples" with the Lego sign on them or not. Maybe the next engine will be able to handle that huge amount of polys. The other thing I did can be seen on my page.. the floorplan for the map. I came up with this in a überboring english lesson.
How long did it take to create "Lego"?
I didn't count the days. First I took pics of Legos with my digicam..the textures were all very badly alligned and it was a pain to work with them. The map sucked and I bought a scanner and restarted from scratch. Since the plan was done on paper the building phase was not so long, but I still thought it would suck so I didn't have a big motivation. It took 2-3 days to build it (it has only 400 brushes or so and could be done in less than 1 day). Then I did 3-4 beta tests 1on1 against Tonnberry. There were few bugs but I fixed them and released it...
The whole trap you put near your picture made me laugh. Is it possible to trap a bot in there?
Its more a joke, it can hardly be used as a trap.
What are your feelings on combining SmallSoldiers and Lego as one map?
Ouch, I would NEVER do that! Neither would I make the rest of the room in DM-SmallSoldiers accessable. It would completely fuck up the gameplay. That's unhealthy for a map, just like low gravity. People who consider instagib hardcore and still think it has tactics would like it tho :P
How about a larger version of Lego..Something that could support teamplay?
Nah, I'm afraid that would fuck up the gameplay, and the teamplay modes have too many flaws in itself (mainly respawning), thats why I dont map for dom and ctf)
Asside from your Lego map, what's next on the chopping block?
NGI asked me to do 4on4 Team Deathmatch maps. Since I dont like that mode so much because of the respawn flaws, I didn't release the two I made.... But I'll release them soon, so they can put them up on their server. I'm not planing to do another 1on1 map for UT because it could hardly top the Lego map. Besides, I'm busy with Operation Na Pali. :) We didn't post any newsbits lately...but thats because we'd rather work than post news.
Well, thanks to David for taking the time to talk with us. In case you haven't already, download DM-1on1-Lego. It is truely worth the download if you enjoy 1 verses 1 action. Also, look out for Team Vortex's upcoming singleplayer project called Operation Na Pali.
